There’s something about the desert that just gets me. The light, the textures, the way everything feels both timeless and brand new depending on how the sun hits. When it comes to photography, Greater Palm Springs is a dream. Whether you're eloping with just a handful of loved ones or celebrating a family reunion at a local AirBNB, the landscape here always adds a little magic. These are some of my favorite places to shoot, each with its own unique energy. As a highly rated wedding and family portrait photographer in Palm Springs I know a few great spots.

Downtown Palm Springs
Mid-century architecture, swaying palms, and mountain views in every direction—downtown Palm Springs is an iconic backdrop for any session. I love the mix of soft desert tones and bold pops of color from the historic buildings and vintage signage. There’s a rhythm to the city, a little bit glamorous but still relaxed, perfect for couples who want a touch of old Hollywood charm in their photos. Intimate weddings and elopement photography comes easy with this place as a backdrop.
Mission Creek Preserve
Tucked away in Desert Hot Springs, Mission Creek Preserve feels like a hidden oasis. The trails wind through sandy washes, with towering cottonwoods and unexpected bursts of greenery. It’s quiet, peaceful, and has this beautiful rawness to it. I love photographing couples here in the golden hour light—it makes everything feel cinematic, like a story unfolding in the wild. I love to do maternity photo sessions here as well as lifestyle family photos. Any kind of portrait photography would be magic here due to the beautiful mountains and neat stone buildings. Wildflower photos in Coachella Valley are nuts here in the Spring when there is a super bloom. This place is close to my heart!
La Quinta Cove Hiking Trails
If you want desert mountains without the crowds, La Quinta Cove is perfect. The trails are surrounded by rugged rock formations, with sweeping views that make you feel like you’re in another world. Sunrise and sunset bring the most incredible colors to the sky, and there’s a stillness in the air that makes everything feel more intimate. It’s one of my favorite spots for couples who want something adventurous but still easy to access. La Quinta portrait photography is pristine here. The mountain peaks throw light rays in a spectacular way. I like to bring couples here to elope or have private vows and a bride and groom session. This place is also a favorite for engagement photography sessions! There is not much color, but usually the sky outs on a show. It is recommend to wear bright cooors, or white. Khaki is and sage green would not be great choices here due to the landscape.
Pioneertown
Originally built as a movie set in the 1940s, Pioneertown is all rustic charm with its weathered wood buildings and desert backdrop. It’s quirky, historic, and full of character—perfect for couples who love a little Western flair. The surrounding landscape is just as stunning, with Joshua trees and wide-open skies that stretch forever. It’s one of those places where time slows down, and every photo feels like a piece of a bigger story. Pioneertown wedding photos have become a favorite! I love this quiet little town with plenty of quirks. The soundstage is a great place for a maternity photos shoot or even an engagement session. I love photographing happy families here as well. The kids usually have fun at the photo session because of all the cool things to see. Family photos are really special here!
Hemingway at Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua Tree is always an incredible place to shoot, but Hemingway, a less-visited area of the park, has its own special magic. The rock formations here feel almost sculptural, and the way the light filters through the boulders at sunrise or sunset is unreal. It’s a fantastic place to photograph families, with so many different directions to explore and endless opportunities for stunning backdrops. The sunsets here are particularly breathtaking, with the rocks catching and filtering the light in a way that creates the dreamiest glow. This is my top spot in JTNP, although Cap Rock and Keys view are great too. The close proximity to the gate and the rock formations make it ideal for family photos. Children do not want a long drive. Maternity sessions and engagement sessions are fun here too. I could shoot with 5 different groups here and get 5 completely different scenes. Lifestyle and documenting photography at its finest!
Why the Desert?
There’s a reason people are drawn to the desert—it has a way of making everything feel more alive. The light is softer, the colors richer, and the landscapes more dramatic. It’s a place where simplicity and beauty go hand in hand, where moments feel more intentional. Whether it's the golden glow of the mountains at sunset or the quiet vastness of the open sky, the desert has a way of turning even the smallest moments into something unforgettable. And that’s what makes it such a perfect place for photos.
